2013 - third year was a charm

2013 Program
Total Upcycled & Recycled: 7 tons

ZeroLandfill Pittsburgh has engaged over 450 people as donors, recipients or volunteers and logged over 400 volunteer hours.
This year, there were 45 donor sign-ins and at more than 65 educators received free materials for their classrooms.
In our first three years we have supplied three summer camps with free binders and hundreds of people took home great materials for their art, education, or home improvement projects.

Joy, Erika, Emma, David, Dan and the Bee Dance group wanted to thank everyone that contributed, volunteered their time, and collected material for Zerolandfill.

PechaKucha Night

Join the Pittsburgh chapters of AIGA and AIA for PechaKucha Night: Vol 11, Thursday, March 29 at 8pm.
PKN is an event for local creatives to meet and network while presenters share their stories, collections, products or work in 6 minutes and 40 seconds of exquisitely matched words and images. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of conversation ("chit chat"), it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.

celebration - biomimicry responsible for development of successful products

celebrate - It's Nature's Way

Michael Dungan, Pres/CEO - BeeDance
Michael Dungan’s work is dedicated to discovering new abundance in our community by reclassifying waste as an asset. Through his consultancy APISync, the community project ZeroLandfill, and the online marketplace BeeDance, Michael is disrupting the status quo and bringing new understanding to the role of waste in our society. In nature, a lot of waste is generated, yet nothing is wasted. Human centered systems have every opportunity to mimic this core principal.

harvest - tons of stuff

Carpet samples make more than Muppets

popcitymedia.com

When architect David Roth puts building projects out for bid, he gets an overwhelming number of manufacturers' samples in response, from paint chips to bricks -- enough to paper a small wall or pave a tiny courtyard, he says. And by next year the carpet samples, wall coverings, fabric, stone, glass, tile, laminates and vinyl, in their three-ring binders, have.all gone out of style.

Firms like Roth's The Downtown Design Company amass tons of the stuff -- literally. Now ZeroLandfill, an effort of Cleveland's BeeDance project, has chosen Pittsburgh as its 14th city, offering a creative way to redistribute and upcycle, or reuse, the material by artists, teachers or anyone else who wants to give them new life.

ZeroLandfill will hold two collection days (April 1 and 15, noon-3 p.m.) at Guardian Storage (2839 Liberty Ave., in the Strip District), followed by two giveaway days (April 2 and 16, noon-3 p.m.). Fill up a bag, fill up your car.

cultivation - reclassifying waste as a resource

Cultivation: Fill some community service hours or just volunteer where help is needed.  See you next month for THE Earth Day program of 2011!
Users of the ZeroLandfill™ service model a very generous spirit by tirelessly reclassifying waste as a resource (especially our volunteers!).  If you are not familiar with ZeroLandfill™, we repurpose items that are considered waste by one audience and connect them to audiences who deem the materials essential to their programs or processes.

Thanks to all our sponsors for your help with our pilot program... it's exciting to find out how much stuff we can upcycle together!

pollination - giving materials to artists & teachers

Lisa A. Abraham | 02.06.2011
Pollinate: In Akron, the treasure chest is open this year every Saturday in February from noon to 3 p.m. in vacant space at 30 N. High St.

It's the third year the program has come to Akron since its inception in Cleveland in 2006. The program is operating in 14 cities as far away as Nashville and Minneapolis-St. Paul (editors note: Pgh in April).

On Saturday, there was a line of volunteers waiting to drop off material and another line of anxious scavengers hoping to find something they can use.

It took Lori Csejtey of Akron only a few minutes to claim several large bolts of fabric wallcovering that had arrived just minutes before. Csejtey and her husband are decorating a space at Red Light Gallery, 111 N. Main St., Akron. The wallcoverings are perfect for the space, which will be styled as a boudoir, she said.

Her discovery brought a smile to the face of Christy Gray, one of the organizers of ZeroLandfill, who asked Csejtey to send along some photos of the finished space.

Over the last six years, more than half a million pounds of decorator and builder samples have been spared from landfills and put to new use, Gray said.

Celebrate Earth Day with us... thanks Construction Junction for your sponsorship and help with harvest & pollination!

celebration - anyone can participate in giveaway of materials

Lisa A. Abraham | 02.06.2011

Why deposit it in a landfill when there are artists, teachers and students willing to take it and create with it?

What ''it'' is varies from week to week, depending on what materials are being discarded by local architects and interior designers. It could be swatches of fabric, or it could be carpet samples. It could be rolls of wallcoverings or it could be laminate countertop samples.

ZeroLandfill Akron is like a treasure hunt for local artisans and educators who come to reclaim the unwanted materials for use in artwork or classroom projects.

It's the third year the program has come to Akron since its inception in Cleveland in 2006. The program is operating in 14 cities as far away as Nashville and Minneapolis-St. Paul and now Pittsburgh!
